What happened to Detroit. Over the course of 100 years, the population level of Detroit has rapidly expanded and contracted. And the city infrastructure – streets, schools, hospitals – expanded as well to meet demand. When the population started to decline, the additional infrastructure remained. In many Detroit neighborhoods the amount of houses coming up for sale on the market was far greater than the demand. Vacant houses sat for months and then years, becoming easy targets for arson. Detroit is a city laid out and designed for 2 million people. Less than a third of that number remain today. Detroiturbex.com is a website dedicated to exploring and photographing abandoned buildings in Detroit.

Its October 14, 2011, day 28 of #OccupyWallstreet. America is rocked. The world is watching, the media is manipulating, people are energized. Citizens have come together to express their frustration with corruption through this robust and peaceful protest movement.
Occupy Wall Street is the first real protest movement of my generation. Satellite movements have sprung up in every major city across the country including Los Angeles.  Making art is the best way I know how to participate and what a better way then to create a huge American Flag that breaks up into 64 individual protest signs laid on the South East lawn of City Hall. The slogans written on each sign were grabbed from the related Twitter hash tag topics on #OccupyWallstreet #OccupyLA. With the frustrations of the 99% mounting, Pandora’s Box has been thrust open. Complacency is no longer an option…

You probably have noticed the disparition of the “Freedom for Kareem” module on the left column… cause Kareem – the egyptian blogger – is free!
Kareem Amer was set free Monday 15th of November 2010, after spending 1470 days in prison.

Throughout the gloominess of the prison walls, there was also a lustrous ray of hope of those who were by my side; expressing solidarity with me and supporting me during my ordeal. Whether they shared the same views with me or not, they all believed in the cause: Freedom of speech for all, regardless differences and orientations. I really can’t thank them enough! Thank you all from the bottom of my heart! I wish for you the best in your lives and careers. I owe you all a big debt of gratitude, which I’ll keep eternally, and never forget the noble and genuine support I’ve received. I’d like to deeply thank some of the unknown soldiers, who gave all they had to support me through the hard times. This is less than what they truly deserve, and even the least thing I can do for them in return. Those unknown soldiers are, in no specific order and please forgive me if I forgot anyone because I’m overwhelmed at the moment, Shahinaz Abdel Salam, the brave activist and blogger who visited me many times in the prison but was blocked afterwards like many others, Dalia Ziada, my dear friend who has done her best supporting me although her letters were blocked also, Esra’a Al Shafei, the Bahraini activist and blogger, and the director and founder of FreeKareem.org, and especially to all the editors of FreeKareem.org. Those, and many others, have endured extraordinary efforts for me, and they’ve succeeded in spreading my voice worldwide. To all of them; I’m grateful, and I’ll never forget your favour for the rest of my life. Kareem Amer. 27th of November 2010. Cairo

Known to his friends simply as “Giant” or “Boss,” Andre was born on May 19th, 1946, in Grenoble, France, the child of Russian immigrants. Shortly after his birth, he was diagnosed with a rare glandular disease, acromegaly, which caused his body to over-produce growth hormones. As a result, Andre grew to a height of somewhere between 6’11” and 7’5” and a weight of over 500 pounds (his actual height and weight have been speculated about for decades—the business is notorious for inflating wrestlers’ statistics—but Andre’s illness sometimes made him slouch or bow his shoulders, so he might well have been the advertised 7’5”). He first wrestled as Andre the Butcher, but it was Vincent J. McMahon Sr., owner of New York’s World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF), who christened him “Andre the Giant.” – by Richard English, for Modern Drunkard magazine

spam.jpg

History of spamming, as read on Wikipedia: It is widely believed the term spam is derived from the 1970 Monty Python SPAM sketch, set in a cafe where nearly every item on the menu includes SPAM luncheon meat. As the waiter recites the SPAM-filled menu, a chorus of Viking patrons drowns out all conversations with a song repeating “SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM… lovely SPAM, wonderful SPAM”, hence “SPAMming” the dialogue. The excessive amount of SPAM mentioned in the sketch is a reference to British rationing during World War II. SPAM was one of the few meat products that avoided rationing, and hence was widely available.
Although the first known instance of unsolicited commercial e-mail occurred in 1978…

Have also a look at the short movie done by Left Hand Rotation (Spain). They are spamming people in the streets.

marck.jpg

We’ve received this message from our brazilian mate, Marck (Nitrocorpz / Designers Mixtape):

Last Sunday, April 29th, during a photo shoot for a client, our house got broken into and my Macbook Pro 17″ was stolen. I spent years saving money to buy this computer, which costs a fortune in Brazil. To make matters even worse, I lost all of my files, I mean EVERYTHING (professional and personal work, email contacts/communication, etc.).My computer’s serial number is: W86243M1THY just in case you see it laying around somewhere. We filed a police report, but it’s Brazil, so we not very hopeful of recovering it.

I thought I would make a donation page in case you’d like to help me raise money to get something (anything) so I can get back to work.

Thanks for all the love and support. Peace, Marck

Adobe has announced the launch of their new CS3 line of products containing new and improved versions of previous software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, etc (details on http://www.adobe.com). With new products comes new pricing… fair enough. However, prices for the same product (i.e. the mac design premium upgrade from CS2.0) go from 599$ for an upgrade in the US to 1’057$ in Switzerland and 1’134$ in France and Germany, the worse being 1’178 $ for the UK… not fair enough! (all prices excl. tax). Prices in Europe have always been a little higher, but 190% of the US price is pushing it!

You can read and sign the petition requesting Adobe to apply fair pricing in Europe compared to the US.

ufo.jpg

If the only strange things seen in the sky were a few oddly moving lights, or some specks glinting in the sun, there would be no UFO problem. But there have been many close observations of these strange objects. In addition, physical traces of various kinds have been left behind, and witnesses have experienced physical and medical effects, including injury and death. Of all of the reported sightings, between 5 and 25% (depending on the sample) remain unidentifiable to expert examination. These are the real UFOs. – Mark Cashman

uncool.gif

Someone asked Dali “what is fashionable?”, and he answered “what is your fashion”. Taking into account this postulate, a group of observers intends to glimpse a vanguard in the anti-global no trends. Their goal is to observe everydaylife and point out the uncool circuit, the anti-hegemonic culture.
